Blue Boat Coffee is Leland, Michigan's best coffee shop. We provide our customers with a delightful cafe experience, offering coffee and espresso from MADCAP Coffee, unique pastry and charm in a modern setting.
Our shop provides bake goods from various local specialty bakeries.
We are a third wave coffee shop; a movement to roast and brew high-quality flavor—the end product an artisanal beverage—rather than a commodity. You deserve it.
Blue Boat Coffee, located at 106 N Main Street, was recently purchased by Susan Kurnick, a Leland resident of over 2 years. Blue Boat will open as planned on Friday, April 12.
“I’ve been a faithful customer for years, and I remember the first time I enjoyed their coffee,” said Kurnick, the new owner of the popular coffee stop in Leland. “I’ve always had a passion to own a business and start a new career for myself. This opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time.”
Kurnick heard about Blue Boat’s inclination to sell, and was quick to speak with its local founders, Joe and Greta Campo, and Amanda and Todd Johnson.
Both the Campos and Johnsons (all family, Joe and Amanda as brother/sister) had discussed opening a coffee shop for years, combining talents from past careers and passions. The small space came up for lease and they were quick to grab it. The name “Blue Boat” is nostalgic; it was the boat the Campos grew up with on Lake Leelanau, and shared numerous memories of childhood adventures.
“The business we all started five years ago has grown so beautifully over the years, but has expanded in such a way that makes it difficult to spend enough time with our families, especially in the summer. After much deliberation, it was a bittersweet decision to sell our business to the next eager, imaginative owner. Someone who would be able to take it to the next place for the community, “ Campo explains.
“We are thrilled to have found Susan and are excited to teach her about our business’s success, as well as the MADCAP coffee and brand. She is very capable of keeping up with the level of quality and service in which we demanded.”
Blue Boat will operate as usual, brewing MADCAP coffees, and offering baked goods from Sisson’s, 9 Bean Rows and Third Coast Bakery.
Moving forward, Joe will be starting his second year as a licensed agent with Tim Schaub and Schaub Team Premier Realty in Leland (203 N Main Street), Greta will continue growing and operating her shop, Dam Candy Store in Fishtown (197 River Street), and Amanda plans to bring more focus back to her design career. Their family partnership remains entrepreneurial, with hopes to collaborate again.
